Serving as the follow-up to previously released single 'Current Dose', Weymouth punk band Weatherstate have pulled back the proverbial curtain in their new single and music video, ‘Never Getting Better’.
“‘Never Getting Better’ is about the feeling of complete apathy towards everyone and everything," vocalist Harry Hoskins begins on the inspiration behind the track. "Reaching the point of acceptance that there’s nothing you can do but sit back and watch how everything has gone to complete sh*t. This song was written in the summer of 2020 when it felt like there was no end in sight. We were supposed to fly out to the [United] States for the first time and our plans we had dreamed of for years were ripped up in front of our faces. So I locked myself in my room in a sulk and wrote the hook to this song.”
After the disappointing year that was 2020, Weatherstate are back with a bang in 2021. Since releasing their debut album Born A Cynic in 2019, the band have been busy playing gigs (both in person when it was allowed, and on the internet when it was necessary) and continually working on new music, catching the attention of Rude Records in the process with their hooky, melodic riffs, '90s throwback feel with a modern twist, and hard-working DIY ethic. The independent label is set to release the band's second album later this year.
Led by frontman Hoskins, Weatherstate’s line-up is completed by guitarist Callan Milward, bassist Joe Hogan, and drummer Toby Wrobel. They’ve risen to the challenges that COVID has posed and, whilst the pandemic threw a bit of a spanner in the works, the band have been working with Four Year Strong’s Alan Day to produce new songs, albeit remotely.
“I feel Alan really taught us a lot about how to approach a song and see the potential in having an open mind on songwriting,” enthuses Milward about the process and connection. “We really wanted to level up and evolve as a band. I feel the first single we released – ‘Hangar’ – is evidence of that. He's a super talented dude and has great vision in the potential of new music.”
“It goes without saying but doing everything remotely has been a massive challenge and an interesting obstacle to overcome,” continues Milward. “Especially for us, as we have been pretty traditionalist when it comes to writing. I feel we handled it in the best way we could, considering the international side of things, too. With pre-production, we had to have some late nights because of the time-zone differences. Neil Kennedy at The Ranch really nailed the engineering and Alan smashed the mix over in the [United] States. All I can say is that you can work miracles over Zoom these days.”
With their second album in the works, Weatherstate will return with new music later this year. In the meantime, the band's latest drop 'Never Getting Better' is available to stream below!
