UK-turned-LA alt-rockers Charming Liars have this week released their highly-anticipated three-track EP, Sequence 2: The After, a haunting collection featuring singles 'Afterglow', 'The Haunting' and 'Beautiful Roses'.
“In 2021 I was faced with the passings of two very close people in my life, and with those passings came a flood of questions pertaining to what happens after death," begins vocalist Kiliyan Maguire, speaking on the EP. "Our new EP The After really allowed me a place to grieve as well as explore the questions these passings brought with them. It's the first concept piece we’ve ever constructed and I'm extremely proud as well as grateful for the healing process that this record brought with it.”
Fans can look forward to hearing the record live this December as Charming Liars hit the road with English rockers The Hunna, kicking off on December 3rd in San Francisco and including stops in Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, New York and more. A full list of dates and tickets can be found here.
Charming Liars' evolution began in London's West End when guitarist Karnig Manoukian and bassist Mike Kruger were still in their teens. Both came from homes with wide ranging and eclectic musical tastes, early exposure of which informed their approach to making music. Over the next few years, the two started writing and playing together in a series of bands, honing their musicianship with several tours up and down the UK. In 2013, they decided to make the move to Los Angeles, in part spurred on by an encouraging social media message from songwriter and producer John Feldmann, who told them to look him up for a songwriting session if they were ever in town.
Shortly after arriving, the two connected with vocalist Kiliyan Maguire through a mutual friend while he was attending The Musicians Institute in Hollywood. Through initial conversations that lead to songwriting and then recording sessions, the trio realised they had an organic musical chemistry that could lead the band to interesting possibilities.
As predicted, 2019 proved to be a breakout year for the band with the release of their debut album Thought, Flesh and Bone and a follow-up acoustic EP, Bare Bones, before closing the year with a live collection aptly titled Live 2019. Charming Liars also headlined shows on the West Coast, toured Europe alongside The Faim, and crossed the US as direct support for Angels & Airwaves. Most recently, the band returned to Europe with Palaye Royale.
Over the last couple months Charming Liars have continued their 'Live Sounds of 2020' live video series, in addition to releasing their Sequence 1: Noise Maker EP in May. The three song collection features recent singles 'Pieces', 'When Did We?' and 'White Leather Electric Chair'.
